Braemar

Aberdeenshire, Scotland

Braemar is a good base for your Scottish winter holiday

The village of Braemar is at the very heart of the Scottish Mountains and is a mecca for walkers and climbers and tourists generally. Increasingly skiers are recognising that it is a superb base for the Scottish ski break.

Braemar has much to offer skiers with a wide range of accommodation from hotels, guest-houses, bed and breakfast homes, hostels and bunk-houses. There are several restaurants and bars where the skier can replenish and relax. There are numerous shops offering both ski-related and general goods, some of these offering a specialised service to the skier and mountain sports enthusiasts. Add ski - hire facilities to these and the list is complete.

Glenshee and the Lecht:

Braemar is the natural base for skiers using the Glenshee Ski Centre - Scotland's largest - for it is just 8 miles along the well-maintained A93. So just 15 minutes after leaving the slopes one can be in the heart of Braemar. But the village also offers the opportunity for skiers to visit the Lecht, a 40 minute drive to the north. Surprisingly because of the short distance between them, the skiing conditions can be very different at Glenshee and the Lecht. This is partly because Glenshee benefits from snow coming from the west and the Lecht benefits from snow coming from the north.

So the choice of two centres offers the skier based in Braemar that something extra.

Braemar is * miles north of Glenshee and 24 miles south of the Lecht

As well as its obvious appeal to down-hill skiers, Braemar is probably the best base in Scotland for cross-country skiing. At 1100 feet above sea-level and holding the record for the lowest temperature recorded in Britain (-27.2 C) the snow tends to be deeper and lie longer here than elsewhere. (Indeed, white Christmases are not uncommon.) For the last few years a successful 'Telemark' festival has been held in early March. This festival which offers not only the opportunity to test skiing skills but to mix with and learn from experts is becoming a great draw.
